Run For The Dogs

Since 2004 we have been sponsoring a puppy through Guide Dogs of America.  Each puppy goes to a GDA certified puppy raiser at the age of 8 weeks to begin their training.  For the next 18 months the puppy will learn basic obedience and be exposed to many different scenario's.  It is important that during this time the puppy become completely socialized, so that he will be able to handle any situation that could come along during his career.  So the puppy raisers will introduce him repeatedly to as many different distractions as is humanly possible and teach him only to give his attention to his handler.

When he is about 16 to 18 months old he will go back to the school and begin his intense formal training to become the guide to a blind person.  At the end of his training he will then be given to a blind individual and go through a 21 day training course with his new handler and on his way to a new life.  These dogs are very inspirational and such a wonderment at what they are capable of doing and giving to their handler that it is such a pleasure to continue year after year to do what we can to help provide them to these wonderfully deserving people.

Please visit the pages below to see some of the dogs that we have been able to help bring along in their training, so that a blind person will know the independence that we all enjoy.
